5 Reasons Your Child Should Train Jiu Jitsu
Parents come to Narvaez Jiu Jitsu for different reasons. Some want their child more active. Some have a child who is being picked on. Most want to build confidence that lasts beyond the mat. Jiu jitsu delivers on all three.
Here are five reasons to get your child started.
1. Confidence That Holds Up Under Pressure
Confidence built through jiu jitsu is earned, not given. Your child learns what their body can do, how to stay calm when someone is applying pressure, and how to solve a problem while it is happening. That composure carries into the classroom, into tryouts, and into every difficult conversation they will ever have.
It also changes how they carry themselves. Children who train tend to stop looking like easy targets, and most confrontations end before they begin. Roughly one in five students ages 12–18 reported being bullied at school in 2021–22 (National Center for Education Statistics).
2. Real Physical Development
Only about 20% to 28% of American children ages 6 to 17 meet the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity (University of Kansas Medical Center).
Class is a full hour of hard work — pushing, pulling, gripping, and moving under resistance. It builds the strength, balance, and body awareness that transfer to every other sport your child plays. And nobody sits on the bench.
3. Focus and Self-Control
In a randomized study of 207 elementary students, children in a school-based martial arts program showed greater gains in self-regulation than peers in standard physical education (Lakes & Hoyt, Journal of Applied Developmental Psychology).
The mat demands attention. Listen, wait your turn, keep control of your hands, and solve a live problem. Parents usually notice the difference at home before we mention it.
4. Resilience
Your child will get swept, passed, and tapped — then shake hands and go again. That repetition teaches something no lecture can: failure is information, not identity. Children who train learn that setbacks are survivable and that effort closes gaps.
5. A Team That Holds Them to a Standard
Jiu jitsu requires trusting a partner with your safety, which builds a bond most youth sports never reach. Our kids program is a room of respectful, hard-working teammates and coaches who expect their best. For many children, that belonging is the reason they stay.
